Handbook Highlights
Student Supervision
- Campus opens at 7:30 am and closes at 5 pm.
- Academic coaches will supervise at least one class room before school Monday through Friday from 7:30 am to 8:30 am.
- Academic coaches will supervise at least one class room after school from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm Monday through Thursday.
- Visitors must sign in and out at the front desk.
- Parents of students must sign students out if they are going to leave school early.
- HTHNC is a closed campus which means students must stay on campus for lunch.
- All teachers rotate supervising students during lunch duty once a week.
- Students should not be in a classroom without teacher supervision.
Facilities
- Please no eating or drinking other than water in the classrooms.
- With block scheduling feel free to take a snack break out on the deck or by the blue tables out back with your students.
- Vandalism is sad and bad. Please let us know if this comes up in any way.
- Gum ruins our tables, rugs, chairs, walls...you name it. Please don't chew it.
Field Trips
- All students need permission slips to leave campus...even if you are walking. See Toni for appropriate paperwork.
- All drivers must be licensed and insured to carry student in their cars. See Toni for appropriate paperwork.
- Drivers may only transport as many students as there are functioning seat-belts in the vehicle. For instance taking the seats out of a van and going off-roading is a bad idea.
Attendance
- Attendance should be taken through powerschool every class period, every day.
- This includes SIG, advisory & X-block.
- Parents can call 760-759-2700 to leave a message for Toni if their student is absent.
- Planned absences longer than 3 days require a contract for independent study (CIS). A CIS should be requested via Toni at least a week prior to the absence.
Medication, Illness, Injuries
- We do not have school nurse.
- By Friday 8/22 we will all have completed the basic first aid, CPR & AED training.
- All injuries should be recorded in an incident report (attached) and shared with Shani, Nikki, or Toni.
- We have simple medical supply case by the door of Shani's office.
- We may not distribute over the counter medications even if a parent requests that we do.
- Students may carry in their backpack prescription medication in the original bottle or over the counter medications.
- Students may not distribute or share their medications.
- Controlled substance medication (i.e. Adderal, Codeine, Vicodin, etc.) should be checked in with Shani.
- If you see a student with medication feel free to quietly ask them how they are feeling and what the medication is for.
- Anything sketchy, such as students sharing a medication, come talk with Shani or Nikki immediately.
Dress Code (aka duress code)
- All students should wear collared shirts that cover their shoulders and midsections.
- Shirts must be buttoned.
- Sweaters and Jackets are fine to wear over but not in place of collared shirts.
- Hoodies (aka hooded sweat shirts) should not be worn at school.
- T-shirts may not be worn over collared shirts.
- Skirts and pants are fine. Skirts should be closer to the knee than to the behind.
- Sandals are not acceptable.
- Dress code should be checked every morning.
- Dress code issues should be sent to Shani at a natural break in class.
Consequences:
- 1st dress code issue: warning and change of clothes
- 2nd dress code issue: call home and "uniform" for 1 week
- 3rd dress code issue: parent meeting and "uniform" for 2 weeks
- Subsequent dress code issues will result in separation and uniform for remainder of semester.
Electronics
- Personal computers are allowed on site after checking in with Sergio.
- Video games of any kind may not be used at any time at school; even on student's personal computer.
- IPODS, Cell phones, MP3 players, pagers, etc. may not be used at school at any time.
- They must remain off and in backpacks from the time students arrive on campus until they leave.
- This includes lunch.
- Students can use the office phone not their cell phones.
- Parents can contact students by calling 760-759-2700.
Consequences:
- 1st issue: Confiscate item and give to Shani. Parent may pick item up from Shani between 3:30 pm and 3:45 pm.
- 2nd issue: Confiscate item and give to Shani. Parent may pick item up from Shani after meeting with student & Shani.
- Subsequent issues will result in separation and parent meeting at the end of semester to pick up item.
General reminder of scary things:
- vandalism
- drugs, alcohol, tobacco
- weapons
- abuse
- emotional issues
- theft
- bullying, intimidation, intolerance
